MISSION STATEMENT

Zion Lutheran Early Childhood Development Center (ECDC) is a mission arm of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. The ECDC exists to serve the Hartland community by assisting parents in the Christian training of their preschool children for a God-pleasing life on earth and an eternity in heaven.

To carry out that mission Zion ECDC will:

share the Gospel of Jesus, our Savior, with young children and their families

teach young children to speak and act in a God-pleasing manner out of love for Jesus

inspire young children to share the Gospel with others

provide a safe, caring, educational, and creative environment for young children to

grow and learn about themselves, others and the world God created

nurture young children’s spiritual, social-emotional, cognitive and physical

growth through a developmentally appropriate, Christ-centered curriculum

PHILOSOPHY

We believe that all people are created and redeemed by a just and loving God. The Bible is the true Word of God by which he makes known to us his plan of salvation. By nature we are all sinful and in need of God’s forgiveness. Out of love for us, God sent his only Son, Jesus Christ, to be our Savior from sin, and brings us to faith through the work of the Holy Spirit. (2Tim.3:16, Ro.6:23, 5:6-8)

God has instructed us through his Holy Bible to teach this message to all. It is God’s will that we all know of his love and mercy through Jesus Christ. Therefore, we want to reach out to our preschool children and their families with the Word of God and nurture their faith in Jesus our Savior.

We believe that each child is a special, unique gift from God and that God has given parents the primary responsibility for the nurturing of their children. (Eph.6:4) Therefore the Zion ECDC exists to support and encourage parents in this most important task. We are pleased that you have enlisted our help and know that cooperation between the home and ECDC is absolutely necessary for the welfare of the children. We will carry out this ministry by helping preschoolers grow as children of God and by helping their parents in their God-given responsibilities.

All our agencies of Christian education (preschool, school, Sunday School, Bible classes, youth programs) have a common goal, to support and reinforce Christ-centered education. We believe these goals are shared by parents and teachers and that you have brought your children here to be in a Christian environment. This environment is designed to educate your child for this life and eternity. We want to strengthen the home-church relationship by strengthening each family’s relationship with their Savior.

GOALS

Through their experiences in the ECDC, the children will:

 Spiritual Development

 Social - Emotional Development

 Cognitive Development

 Physical Development

CURRICULUM

Zion Early Childhood Development Center is a developmental preschool program which includes extended hours of appropriate activities for those children who need a full day of child care. Knowing and believing in Jesus Christ as our Savior is the foundation of our Creative Curriculum. It is the integration of a day of preschool experiences that help children understand that they are loved and redeemed children of God. Doing the “Jesus Way” is how we want to respond to God’s love.

Our curriculum is based on our Christian faith, our understanding of child development, current theories in early childhood education, and our knowledge of each individual child, his interests, needs, abilities, and background. We want each child to develop to his full potential to fulfill God’s will on earth. This developmentally appropriate program will foster the spiritual, physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development of each child.

During Bible Circle children learn about Jesus through Bible stories, verses, songs, and prayer. This is a large group activity that will foster children’s listening, comprehension, and verbal skills. We teach the principles of Christianity in a child’s language so that they may come to grow in faith, and know, love, and serve God. By teaching the Bible through fun activities children find joy in learning God’s Word. Hopefully they will act in a loving manner toward others and share their love for the Lord with all people.

The classroom environment allows children to be comfortable and practice the skills they have learned, while encouraging them to try new experiences. Children are encouraged to make choices, engage in active learning, and build relationships with peers and teachers. The learning centers are filled with concrete, process (not product) oriented experiences for children. This is learning through play. Through play children become better thinkers, problem solvers, and more creative.

The teachers act as facilitators in this child-centered classroom as they guide and supervise play to foster learning. Following a daily routine helps children feel secure by giving them a sense of control as they come to know what to expect. Children will develop the skills, attitudes, and concepts that will enable them to make sense of the world and be successful. Through this rich environment children will make choices and have experiences that develop a true feeling of self-worth as redeemed children of

God.

Other small and large group times involve children in teacher-initiated experiences. These are scheduled throughout the day and consist of story time, playing a game, cooking, singing, learning a finger play, music movement, or planning and sharing. Our day consists of active and quiet times; individual, small, and large group experiences; and indoor and outdoor play.

We believe this curriculum will create capable learners who are able to think for themselves, solve problems, and live as children of God. Their faith in Jesus our Savior will be strengthened through his holy Word. Children will be challenged to use language and their growing ability to construct meaning from print. They will be challenged to use their growing ability to think logically, solve problems, see relationships, and to use their senses in an active process of inquiry and investigation. In this way we will build the foundation for further Christian training and education in reading, math, social studies, and science.

For Parents: The Gospel of Jesus as our only Lord and Savior is God’s power to create faith and give forgiveness. The Gospel message of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ runs like a golden thread through our entire curriculum. Therefore, we are encouraging each and every parent who is new to our doctrine to take advantage of our Bible Information Class. In these 5 classes you will learn about the very basic teachings of the Bible, the ones we will be teaching your children. It is our hope that through this class you and your child will be one in faith.

Learning Centers are an integrated part of the total curriculum. The learning centers are used in a variety of ways. Sometimes all the centers will be available to the children, sometimes only a few will be open and at other times a selection of materials from the centers will be set aside for the children to play with. Although the centers serve to help children meet the goals in all areas of development, this list will accentuate developmental goals that are particular to each learning center.

DISCIPLINE

Positive discipline comes from our understanding of child development, our knowledge of the individual child (family background, special needs, interests), and implementing appropriate expectations. At this age children are becoming more independent and assertive. They are learning to put their feelings, needs, and desires into words. Children are learning that what they say and do is important and that it effects others. They are learning to participate in group routines, and are building relationships with others. Positive discipline guides these young Christians in learning about making God-pleasing choices, in doing the “Jesus Way”. Our source of Christian guidance is knowing that we are redeemed children of God, and expressing that joy in love for our neighbor through words and actions.

Christian guidance occurs when teachers develop a positive relationship with each child and interact with them rather than manage their behavior. Teachers will make positive comments about children’s experiences. Children learn to solve problems, deal with social conflict, and make choices and decisions. This promotes a healthy sense of self-control over their lives, and a positive self-esteem.

Teachers show love and concern for children by letting them know what is expected and setting appropriate limits. They are consistent and state rules positively and firmly. They try to anticipate problems and plan accordingly. Persistent behavior problems will be brought to the attention of the parent, so that we may work together for positive changes.

Teachers will encourage children to think for themselves, correct their own mistakes, and solve their own problems. Teachers will use the techniques of redirection and negotiation to change children’s behavior and assist in conflict resolution. Time out will be used only for behavior that is repeatedly aggressive or unsafe. The teacher may work with all the children involved in a conflict, only the child who has asked for or needs help, or just be nearby to support children in their own negotiations. Learning to get along with others and accept limits takes time.

Our attention will be focused on the problem behavior and not the child. No one will do anything that could break the spirit of a child, be humiliating, frightening or abusive. No one will use food or necessary activities as a punishment, reward, or to manipulate a child.

ADMISSION AND DISCHARGE

The ECDC is a year-round preschool program for all children who are of preschool age, but are at least three years old and toilet trained (self-sufficient in the bathroom). All children are welcome to enroll without reference to race, religion, national or ethnic origin, or gender.

All children will be enrolled for a probationary period of one month. If after one month they maintain a developmental readiness for the ECDC curriculum and daily routine, and there are no reasons to exclude them from attendance according to the policy for exclusion, they will be admitted.

Children shall be enrolled according to the following priority:

SAYING GOODBYE ON THE FIRST DAY OF PRESCHOOL

The first day of preschool is an exciting, new experience for your child, but it can also be filled with anxieties of separation and new experiences. Let your child know that you are enthusiastic about the coming events, and they will be too. Dealing with change and new experiences is a life long skill that takes practice. Life is filled with hellos and good-byes. Be kind to yourself, too. Remember, you are also experiencing a separation. Here are some ideas that will help to make a smooth transition from home to preschool.

*Create a routine at home as you prepare for preschool.

*Talk to your child and let them know what is going to happen -- “You’re going to stay at preschool while I go to work...”

*Your child may bring in a photo of his/her family to hang up and share with us. He/she may also bring a favorite stuffed animal.

*Follow the same routine each morning when you arrive, (sign in, put belongings on their coat hook, wave goodbye from the window). Create a routine for leaving when you pick your child up from preschool, too.

*Allow a few extra minutes to spend with your child on the first few days.

*Talk together with your child’s teacher. Let your child see that you are all friends.

*Try to get your child involved in an activity, as this usually lessens the anxiety.

*Assure your child that you will come back to pick them up. One of their greatest fears is that you won’t come back. Tell them when that will be. Use an activity for a reference point, “I’ll be back when you finish your afternoon snack.”

*Don’t sneak away, even if it seems easier for you. Leaving unnoticed will violate your child’s trust.

*Create a ritual for saying goodbye. Ask your child what they want to do. Do they want to have two hugs, three kisses, or rub noses?

*Once you start to leave, don’t stop. It’s important that you follow through even if your child cries. We will comfort your child.

*Feel free to call later in the morning to see how your child is doing.

*Many children adapt quickly to the routine. However, it is perfectly normal for some children to take several days, or even weeks, to adapt. Some children adjust well at first and then later experience anxiety.

WHAT TO BRING/WHAT TO WEAR

1. Bring a complete set of clothing including shirt, pants, socks, and underwear in a ziplock bag with the child’s name on the bag.

2. Children staying for nap will need a sleeping bag, or a blanket and a sheet. These items will need to be taken home weekly and laundered.

3. Wear play clothes and play shoes with non-skid soles (no clogs, jellies, flip flops..). They need clothes that they can independently manage in the bathroom and are not concerned about when playing with messy materials. Children need shoes that are safe for movement activities both inside and outside.

5. Wear outdoor clothing appropriate for the day’s weather. We will go outside daily, weather permitting. We will keep the children inside if it is colder than 15 F, or if the wind chill is below 0 F. As the weather gets colder, children will need a hat and mittens. As the snow arrives, children will need snow pants and boots.

6. Children staying for lunch need a lunch in a lunch box.

7. Bring a Backpack to carry belongings to and from preschool

8. Children may bring a favorite stuffed animal or baby doll. Do not bring toys. It is more difficult to teach children to share when the toy belongs to someone special. Action figures and toy weapons are never appropriate for preschool.

*All items ( ziplock bag, sleeping bag, blanket, sheet, outdoor clothing, lunch box, backpack) need to be visibly labeled with your child’s name.

DAILY ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE

1. Be sure you have brought all the belongings your child needs for the day. (see What to Bring/What to Wear)

2. Turn the engine off on your vehicle. It is illegal and very dangerous to leave it on.

3. Write down the time your child arrived in the daily SIGN IN / SIGN OUT book. Upon departure write the time and your initials.

4. Encourage your child’s independence, but give the necessary assistance when arriving and departing.

5. Upon arrival escort your child into the ECDC and to a teacher.

6. Upon departure make contact with the teacher, we need to know that your child is safely back into your hands as well as convey information about the day.

7. Take your child’s nap belongings home to be laundered on your child’s last day of the week.

8. Check the Parent Communication Center upon arrival and departure for more important information.

9. Notify the ECDC as soon as possible when your child is going to be absent.

For your child’s safety, he/she will only be released to parents with legal custody, legal guardians, or persons named in writing on the emergency card. We need a note or a phone call if someone other than the usual person will be picking up your child, even when they are named in writing on the emergency card. Teachers must know the adult or will ask for identification before releasing the child.

For your child’s safety, no child will be dismissed to a person (whether authorized or not) who is under the influence of an intoxicant or a controlled substance.

LUNCH - SNACK

Lunch will be supplied by the parent. The child needs to bring a lunch which meets the USDA requirements. Refer to the attached Appendix C for those requirements. Use a lunch box or insulated bag (not a paper or plastic bag) for proper storage. Lunch boxes may be refrigerated.

Please no candy, gum, or soda.

Snacks will be provided by the ECDC and will meet USDA requirements. Refer to the attached Appendix C for those requirements. Snack donations, items which meet the USDA requirements, will be graciously accepted and greatly appreciated. If parents want to bring in a special snack for the group for a birthday party or a special event, they are asked to speak to the director.

Snacks will not include foods such as pastries, donuts, cakes, candy, suckers, chips, or imitation fruit drinks. Snacks will include these types of nutritious foods:

fruit low-sugar cereals crackers muffins granola bars

fruit juice whole grain bread vegetables cream cheese fruit juice popsicles

milk trail/granola mix popcorn cottage cheese cookies (sparingly)

yogurt hard boiled eggs raisins cheese frozen yogurt

pretzels peanut butter pudding jello

Allergies: A special diet may be served only upon written instruction of a child’s physician and upon request of the parent. The parent will be responsible for providing meals and snacks for children needing a special diet.

NAPS

Children are very active at preschool and therefore are required to have a nap or rest period each afternoon. The ECDC will provide each child with a 2” thick vinyl mat and a quiet setting.

Each child will need to bring a sleeping bag or a blanket and a sheet from home. These items will need to be taken home to be laundered on the last day of the week the child attends or more often if necessary.

Children may bring a favorite stuffed animal or baby doll. Please no toys.

A child who does not sleep after 30 minutes and a child who awakens shall be permitted to have quiet time through the use of equipment or activities which will not disturb other children.

CHURCH/SUNDAY SCHOOL/BIBLE STUDY

Church, Sunday School and Bible Study attendance is part of our religious curriculum. Families with children of all ages are encouraged to attend Church services.

Zion Lutheran Church Sunday School is available to children from the age of three. Adult Bible Study is available each Sunday morning at the same time.

We also encourage parents who want to learn about the basic teachings of the Bible to attend the Bible Information Class. This class is held for 5 weekday evenings every fall.

PARENTS AS PARTNERS

By enrolling your child in the ECDC, parents are enlisting the help of early childhood teachers . Together, parents and teachers create many learning experiences for children. These experiences help children learn about God’s love for them and about His wonderful world. At the same time parents and teachers learn about children, and how to parent and teach these precious gifts from God.

Visit/Volunteer/Support: It is a good idea to arrange a visit to the ECDC with your child before the first day your child attends. Parents are welcome to visit their children and teachers anytime at the ECDC. Those parents who are willing and have the time to volunteer are encouraged to speak to the director about volunteer opportunities. Parents may also support the ECDC with donations of snacks (see the snack list), donations of quality toys no longer being used at home, or donations of paper and other useable recyclable materials.

Policies: Each parent will receive a copy of the Parent Handbook. A copy will also be kept by the Parent Communication Center, along with a copy of the Wisconsin Administrative Code, HFS 46, Licensing Rules for Group Day Care Centers.

Conferences: Parents will be given the opportunity to meet with the teachers to discuss their child’s development and progress at least twice a year. The first time will be no more than 3 months after your child enrolls, and the second time will be no more than 6 months later. In addition, if parents wish to arrange a conference at other times, the opportunity is always welcome.

Classes: Bible Information Classes are held on the basics of Christian doctrine beginning in the fall of each year at Zion Lutheran School & ECDC. These 5 classes will cover the following topics: God’s Word, The Triune God, The Law and Gospel, The Means of Grace, and WELS Doctrines. The ECDC encourages all parents to take advantage of this opportunity to learn about or review God’s Word, as this is what we will be teaching your children.

Zion Lutheran Church offers Sunday School for all children from the age of 3 and Adult Bible Study at the same time each Sunday morning.

Bible Study groups are available to ECDC parents. These groups meet informally to study God’s Word and offer Christian support to each other.

Parent Communication Center: Important information will be posted. Parents are expected to view the Center upon arrival and again at departure.

Personal Information: Information personal to your child will be put in your child’s cubby so that it will be brought home in their backpack. It is important to greet a teacher upon arrival and departure so that we may communicate. Please let the teachers know when something at home may effect your child’s behavior at school.

Records: Keep your child’s registration information updated. Whenever you have a change of address, employment, or emergency information, be sure to let the director know.

News: Christ Light messages, newsletters, and special notices will be put in your child’s cubby to be taken home in their backpack.

Bulletin Board Displays: These displays may be found in our ECDC, School, and Church and may periodically pertain to the ECDC program and the children enrolled.

Program Evaluation: Each year parents will have the oppor tunity to evaluate the program on a short survey form. Your feedback is essential. It lets us know what we are doing right, as well as things that need to be changed or improved.

Communication and Commitment: We want to work with you to provide the best possible preschool experience for your child. Please contact the teachers or director with questions, concerns and compliments.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Records: Children must have a Child Health Report, Day Care Immunization Record, and Registration Form including emergency and health information on file before enrollment.

Reporting Child Abuse or Neglect: Anyone working in the ECDC who knows or has reasonable cause to suspect that a child has been abused or neglected, is required by Wisconsin law to contact the county department of social services or human services or a local law enforcement agency.

Allergies: Parents will inform the ECDC of their child’s allergies on the child’s registration form. All staff having direct contact with the children shall be informed about food allergies and other allergies of specific children. However, a special diet may be served only upon written instruction of a child’s physician and upon request of the parent. The parent will be responsible for providing meals and snacks for children needing a special diet.

Illness: It is in the best interest of your child and the other children to keep your child at home when he/she has symptoms of illness. Please contact the ECDC if your child will not be coming to school. (414-367-3617) The director needs to be notified of a child’s absence and the reason for it as early as possible.

Some reasons for a child to remain at home or to be sent home are fever (100 degrees), vomiting, skin rash or sores, inflamed or swollen eyes, diarrhea, cough, sore throat, headache, or head lice. The child may return to the ECDC when he/she is free of symptoms for 24 hours and/or 24 hours after prescribed medication has begun.

Should a teacher feel that a child is unable to function properly at the ECDC due to illness, the parent, or a designated responsible person, when the parent cannot be reached, will be notified immediately and requested to make arrangements for transportation home within 1 hour.

In the event that a child has a contagious disease, he/she may not come to the ECDC. The ECDC must be informed of the disease so notice of possible exposure can be given to all families enrolled and the local public health officer. The child’s name will be kept confidential. A memo will be posted in the parent communication center. A child with a communicable disease will be readmitted to the ECDC only after allowing for the longest usual incubation of the disease or with a signed statement from your physician. Communicable diseases include, but are not limited to: chicken pox, German measles, infectious hepatitis, measles, mumps, scarlet fever, or meningitis.

Medication: When necessary, prescribed medications will be administered by the staff with written consent of the parent. Medication forms must be filled out and may be obtained from the staff.

Medications must be in their original container with your child’s name, name of drug, dosage, directions for administration, and physician’s name written on it. We will not administer over-the-counter medication, unless prescribed by a physician. In that case we will follow the procedure for prescribed medications.

Staff will apply parent-provided and labeled sunscreen or insect repellent to a child when the parent has filled out the necessary medication form.

Injuries/Accidents: Parents will be notified immediately, if their child is injured seriously enough to require professional medical treatment, or when they pickup their child, if the child sustains a minor injury. Written permission from the parent to call a child’s physician or refer the child for medical care in case if injury shall be on file at the ECDC.

A first aid kit, containing bandages, tape, Band-Aids, syrup of ipecac, an ice bag or cold pack, a surface thermometer with disposable covers, and emergency phone numbers will be available to treat minor injuries. Superficial wounds shall be cleaned with soap and water only and protected with a Band-Aid or a bandage. First Aid procedures shall be followed for serious injuries.

Suspected poisoning shall be treated only after consultation with a poison control center.

An accident report will be written for every accident, injury, or incident regardless how minor.

These reports will be signed and dated by the staff and the parent and kept for the records.

Multi - Media

Movie videos, audio tapes, and C.D.'s will also be used in our learning curriculum. The use of such media is an important tool to help all the children of our preschool learn in a variety of different ways. The movie videos, audiotapes, and C.D.'s that will be used in our curriculum will be related only to the theme of the week or to our weekly Bible lesson.
