A Short History of Our Church
On May 5th, 1867 an organizational meeting was held in Hartland to establish a Lutheran church. St. Martin's Evangelical Lutheran Church was dedicated on January 12th, 1868. Services were conducted in Danish, German and English. The name was changed to First Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1871
In 1873 a congregational split resulted in the formation of the Danish Lutheran Church and the new German church - now named Zion Evangelische Lutherische Kirche. Then in 1907, Zion's share of the old church was sold to the Danish church. Zion purchased property across the road and built a new sanctuary in 1907.
Zion Lutheran Church started a Christian Day School in the basement of the church in the year 1976. In 1984, Zion built a new school facility on the other side of Hartland and then expanded that facility to include a gym additional classrooms for a preschool in 1998.
